Škoda says no to WRC27 Rally1 car development, shocking rally fans! But is it the right move?
In a surprising revelation, Škoda's motorsport director Michal Hrabánek has announced that the brand has no plans to join the upcoming WRC27 Rally1 regulations with a spaceframe-based car. This news comes as a blow to fans who were eagerly anticipating Škoda's entry into the new rally car era. Instead, Škoda will focus on enhancing its current Rally2 contender, the Fabia RS Rally2.
Despite the FIA's deputy president Malcolm Wilson revealing that over 10 tuners are keen on the WRC27 regulations, Škoda remains unmoved. When DirtFish inquired about Škoda's intentions, Hrabánek firmly stated their commitment to the Rally2 category for the foreseeable future.
"We're dedicated to refining our Fabia RS Rally2," said Hrabánek. "We've already begun the post-homologation journey and introduced significant improvements with Packet 25. Development is ongoing, and we aim to stay competitive in the Rally2 category." But here's where it gets controversial: Škoda believes that the performance gap between Rally2 and WRC27 cars might not be as significant as expected.
Hrabánek explained, "While the WRC27 cars will have a spaceframe design, many mechanical components will be similar to Rally2 cars. It's challenging to predict which concept will be more competitive." This statement raises questions about the potential competitiveness of Škoda's Rally2 car against the upcoming WRC27 machines.
Škoda's success in the WRC2 category is undeniable, with a podium finish at the Monte Carlo Rally and 14 cars set to compete in Rally Sweden. However, with the new regulations looming, is Škoda missing a golden opportunity to showcase its engineering prowess?
As Škoda sticks to its Rally2 guns, the debate rages on. Will the brand's decision pay off, or will they regret not embracing the WRC27 challenge? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
