A groundbreaking revelation has emerged from Public Health Scotland (PHS), indicating that the risk of cancer-related fatalities in Scotland has reached an unprecedented low. This remarkable trend, spanning two decades, showcases a 23.8% decline in cancer mortality rates between 2000 and 2024, with a further 12.1% reduction in the past decade alone. But here's where it gets controversial: despite this success, the total number of cancer deaths has seen a slight increase over the past decade, raising questions about the underlying factors at play.
The Scottish government attributes this to earlier detection, more effective treatments, and substantial investments in cancer services. However, the data also reveals a concerning trend: cancer is more prevalent in older individuals, with nearly three-quarters of all cancer deaths occurring in those aged 70 and above. This shift in demographics has led to an increase in the average age at death, both for men and women, highlighting the evolving nature of cancer and the need for tailored healthcare strategies.
Prof. David Morrison, a consultant in public health at PHS, emphasizes the positive impact of smoking reduction and improved cancer treatments. Lung cancer deaths have decreased by a quarter in the past decade, and breast cancer mortality rates among women have dropped by 11%.
