Unveiling the Truth: Rico Verhoeven's Free Agency Journey
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) made a bold move, but was it enough to lure the legendary Rico Verhoeven?
In a recent interview, Verhoeven lifted the lid on his free agency negotiations, revealing the intriguing offers he received from the UFC. But here's where it gets controversial: the UFC's proposal might have been more substantial than many expected.
Verhoeven, a true heavyweight in the world of kickboxing, had options. He could have crossed over to the UFC, a move that would have shaken up the MMA world. However, he chose a different path, opting for a historic boxing match against Oleksandr Usyk, the undisputed heavyweight champion.
"It was a decent offer," Verhoeven shared on 'The Ariel Helwani Show'. "When you compare it to a potential fight against Anthony Joshua, with a serious paycheck, or a transition to the UFC, it's a tough choice. Derrick Lewis is an exceptional fighter, but he doesn't carry the same stature I'm seeking. It was a good starting point for the UFC, but I had my eyes on the Joshua fight."
While Verhoeven didn't disclose the exact figures, he confirmed that the UFC's offer was comparable to his earnings in GLORY kickboxing, where he established himself as a star.
"They showed me a lot of respect," he emphasized. "The offer was fair, especially considering what they offer other fighters. But in the world of martial arts, and given my success in GLORY, it didn't quite add up for me."
At 36, Verhoeven returns to the boxing ring with a perfect 1-0 record, ready to challenge Usyk's undefeated streak. This historic bout, taking place at the Pyramids in Giza, Egypt, on May 23, has the kickboxing world buzzing.
Verhoeven, widely regarded as the greatest heavyweight kickboxer in modern history, left the sport with an impressive 66-10 record. His decision to pursue boxing instead of the UFC has sparked debates among fans and experts alike.
And this is the part most people miss: Verhoeven's choice wasn't just about the money or the stature. It was about finding the right challenge and the right stage to showcase his skills. So, what do you think? Was the UFC's offer enough to tempt Verhoeven away from his kickboxing legacy? Or did he make the right call in pursuing the boxing world's biggest names?
