The NRL is facing a dramatic legal showdown over star player Zac Lomax's contract, sparking a debate about player movement and the 'best interests of the game.'
Parramatta Eels have taken legal action against both Lomax and the Melbourne Storm, with the NRL itself drawn into the dispute after receiving a subpoena. The core of the issue lies in Lomax's attempt to break free from his $700,000-a-year contract with the Eels, a deal that had four years remaining on it. Lomax's initial plan was to join a new global rugby union competition called R360. However, when that venture collapsed, he turned his attention to the Storm.
The Eels' stance is that their deed of release for Lomax includes a clause preventing him from signing with another NRL club until October 31, 2028, without their explicit written permission. This has led to the current legal battle, with the Eels seeking documents detailing the Storm's negotiations with Lomax.
But here's where it gets controversial: ARLC chairman Peter V'landys has stepped in, arguing that Lomax shouldn't be punished for what he calls a "mistake." V'landys emphasized that Lomax is a "marquee player" and that making errors is part of life. He expressed concern that if Lomax moves to rugby union, it would provide significant, free publicity for a competitor, much like the attention Joseph Suaalii has generated for rugby union. "Why would we want to give somebody to another competitor to get all this publicity?" V'landys questioned.
He also highlighted the human element, stating, "You’ve got to remember, what everyone has forgotten here is Zac is a human being. The mental state that he must be in at the moment with all the backlash he is getting." V'landys believes Lomax's only "sin" was trying to improve his situation and that of his family, a responsibility he feels all players have. "I don’t think he should be hung and strung for it," he declared.
And this is the part most people miss: The Eels are reportedly seeking compensation, with claims that the Storm promised to cover Lomax's legal expenses, which could amount to around $250,000. This could create a salary cap issue for the Storm if deemed an illegal advantage.
V'landys also pointed out that the Eels themselves acquired Lomax without a transfer fee when he moved from St. George. He urged both parties to consider the "best interests of the game" rather than their own self-interests. "I know the Parramatta supporters all want blood, but when you look back Parramatta got him for free to start with," V'landys stated.
